Turbo Cropper

Create Gallery Thumbnails

What This Page Does

The Turbo Cropper lets you create eye-catching thumbnails for your photo galleries. It automatically scans the gallery website, downloads available images, and gives you an easy-to-use cropping tool to select the perfect thumbnail. You can also add star ratings and custom text overlays to make your thumbnails stand out.

How to Get Here

Navigate to Admin Panel > Database > Galleries > Review, then click the Create Thumbnail button next to any gallery that needs one.

Understanding the Page

The Three-Step Process

Creating a thumbnail happens in three stages:

  1. Entry Form - You'll see this if you access the tool directly. Just enter the gallery ID and URL, then click Start.
  2. Progress Page - The system automatically scans the gallery website and downloads images. You'll see real-time progress.
  3. Cropping Interface - Choose your favorite image, crop it to the perfect area, add optional overlays, and save.

Most of the time, you'll skip step 1 because clicking "Create Thumbnail" from the gallery list takes you directly to the progress page.

The Progress Page

What You'll See

When scanning starts, you'll see:

  • A progress bar showing how far along the scan is
  • Status cards showing images found, pages scanned, target images, and downloaded count
  • A scrolling scan log with color-coded messages (green for success, red for errors)
  • The status badge at the top shows "Initializing," then "Scanning," then "Scan Complete"

What's Happening

The system visits the gallery website, looks for all images on the page, and downloads the best ones (up to 25 images). This usually takes 10-30 seconds depending on the website's speed.

Tip: You don't need to do anything during scanning - just watch the progress. The page updates automatically every second.

When Scanning Completes

A green Continue to Cropping button appears along with a Return to Admin link. Click "Continue to Cropping" to start creating your thumbnail.

Warning: If the scan fails with errors, check the log for details. Common issues include blocked websites, missing images, or the site requiring a login to view images.

The Cropping Interface

This is where you create the actual thumbnail. The interface has three main areas:

Thumbnail Strip (Top)

A horizontal scrollable row of all downloaded images. The largest image is automatically selected when you first arrive.

How to use it:

  1. Look through the available images by scrolling left or right
  2. Click any image to select it as your main image
  3. The selected image shows a green border; all others have black borders
  4. Images show their file size underneath (larger usually means better quality)

 

Tip: The system automatically picks the largest image first, which is usually the best quality. But you can always switch to a different one if you prefer.

Main Cropping Area (Center)

This shows your selected image with a green selection box overlay. The image appears dimmed (darkened) so the selection box is easier to see.

How to crop:

  1. Draw a new selection - Click and drag on the darkened image (outside the current selection box) to draw a new crop area
  2. Move the selection - Click and drag inside the green box to move it around without changing its size
  3. The selection maintains the correct aspect ratio for your thumbnail automatically
Note: The crop box locks to your category's thumbnail dimensions, so your saved thumbnail will always be the right shape.

Quick shortcut: Double-click the green crop box to instantly save and move to the next gallery. This is perfect for batch processing many galleries.

Live Preview Panel (Right)

Shows exactly what your final thumbnail will look like, including any star ratings or text overlays you add. The preview updates instantly as you move the crop box or change settings.

Adding Overlays

Star Rating Overlay

Add a star rating to your thumbnail to show quality at a glance.

How to add stars:

  1. Check the Enable star overlay checkbox
  2. Click the stars to choose your rating (1-5 stars)
  3. Pick a color using the color picker (gold is the default)
  4. Choose where to place the stars using the Position dropdown

Position options:

  • Top Left, Top Right
  • Bottom Left, Bottom Right
  • Center

 

The stars appear on your thumbnail image and in the live preview.

Tip: Use consistent star ratings across your galleries to help visitors quickly identify your best content.

Text Overlay

Add custom text to your thumbnails to label them, add branding, or highlight features.

How to add text:

  1. Check the Enable text overlay checkbox
  2. Type your text in the text box (up to 50 characters)
  3. Choose your text color, font, size, and style
  4. Select where to place the text

Quick text buttons: The page shows buttons for your most-used text and category names. Click any button to instantly apply that text.

Text options:

Setting What It Does
Font Family Choose from 8 fonts (Arial, Helvetica, Times, etc.)
Font Size Adjust text size from 8 to 48 pixels
Font Weight Make text normal or bold
Rotation Rotate text from -180° to +180°

Text effects:

Effect What It Does
Text Color Choose any color for your text
Drop Shadow Add a shadow behind the text for better readability
Shadow Color Choose the shadow color (black works best)
Shadow X/Y Move the shadow left/right and up/down
Shadow Blur Make the shadow soft or sharp
Outline Add a colored outline around each letter

Text position options:

  • Top: Left, Center, Right
  • Middle: Left, Center, Right
  • Bottom: Left, Center, Right
Tip: For best readability, use white text with a black drop shadow, or add a thick outline. This makes text stand out on any background.

Action Buttons

Four buttons appear above the cropping area:

Button What It Does
Capture Saves your thumbnail and closes the page after 5 seconds
Capture and NEXT Saves your thumbnail and automatically loads the next gallery that needs one
Rescan Images Reloads the page to scan the gallery website again (useful if the scan missed images)
Disapprove Marks the gallery as disapproved and skips to the next gallery
Tip: Use "Capture and NEXT" when you're processing multiple galleries. It speeds up your workflow by automatically moving to the next gallery that needs a thumbnail.

Common Tasks

How to Create a Basic Thumbnail

  1. Wait for the scan to complete
  2. Click Continue to Cropping when it appears
  3. Look at the image strip and click a different image if you prefer one over the auto-selected one
  4. Click and drag on the darkened image to draw your crop selection
  5. Click Capture to save

The page will show your saved thumbnail and automatically close after 5 seconds.

How to Batch Process Multiple Galleries

This is the fastest way to create thumbnails for many galleries at once.

  1. Start with the first gallery needing a thumbnail
  2. Choose your crop area
  3. Add overlays if desired
  4. Click Capture and NEXT (or double-click the crop box)
  5. The system automatically loads the next gallery after 3 seconds
  6. Repeat steps 2-5 for each gallery

When you reach the last gallery, the system wraps around to check if any earlier galleries still need thumbnails. If everything is complete, you'll see a celebration screen showing your statistics.

Success: When all galleries have thumbnails, the system shows a "All Galleries Complete!" message with your totals, then returns you to the admin panel after 8 seconds.

If the gallery images are poor quality or unsuitable:

  1. Click the Disapprove button
  2. The gallery is marked as disapproved in your database
  3. The system automatically loads the next gallery after 1.2 seconds
Note: Disapproved galleries won't show up in your "needs thumbnail" queue anymore, so you won't keep seeing them.

How to Add a Star Rating

  1. Check the Enable star overlay checkbox
  2. Click the stars to set your rating (1-5)
  3. Pick your star color (default is gold)
  4. Choose your position from the dropdown
  5. Check the live preview to see how it looks
  6. Click Capture or Capture and NEXT

How to Add Custom Text

  1. Check the Enable text overlay checkbox
  2. Type your text in the text field, or click a quick text button
  3. Adjust the font, size, color, and effects
  4. Choose where to place the text
  5. Check the live preview
  6. Click Capture or Capture and NEXT
Tip: If you use the same text frequently (like your site name), it will appear as a quick button for faster access next time.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Speed up your workflow with these shortcuts:

Shortcut Action
Ctrl+Enter (Mac: Cmd+Enter) Save thumbnail (same as clicking Capture)
Double-click crop box Save and move to next gallery
Note: The Ctrl+R shortcut for rescanning is intercepted by the page to prevent accidentally refreshing the browser.

Tips for New Users

Tip:
  • Start with quality images - The scanner automatically tries to download the largest available images, which usually means better quality thumbnails
  • Use consistent overlays - If you add star ratings or text, use the same style across all galleries for a professional look
  • Double-click to go fast - When batch processing, double-clicking the crop box is faster than clicking the button
  • Check the preview - The live preview shows exactly what your thumbnail will look like, so always glance at it before saving
  • Save master copies - The system automatically saves a full-quality master copy of each thumbnail in case you need to regenerate them later

Troubleshooting

The scan isn't finding any images

What you see: The progress page completes but says "No valid thumbnail images were found."

How to fix it:

  1. Visit the gallery URL in your browser to make sure it loads normally
  2. Check if the website requires a login or blocks automated tools
  3. Some websites load images with JavaScript after the page loads - these won't be detected
  4. Try a different gallery from the same source to see if the problem is site-wide
  5. Click the Rescan Images button to try again

 

Images are downloading slowly or failing

What you see: The progress shows many errors or the download count stays low.

How to fix it:

  1. Some websites block hotlinking (downloading images directly). This is common.
  2. The gallery images may have been moved or deleted
  3. Try scanning from the gallery's homepage instead of a specific page
  4. Check if the source website is currently online and accessible

 

The cropping interface isn't showing

What you see: You clicked "Continue to Cropping" but the page is blank or only shows the thumbnail strip.

How to fix it:

  1. Refresh the page
  2. Clear your browser cache
  3. Check your browser's console for JavaScript errors (press F12)
  4. Make sure at least one image downloaded successfully during the scan

 

Text overlay isn't appearing on saved thumbnails

What you see: Text shows in the preview but doesn't appear on the final saved thumbnail.

How to fix it:

  1. This usually means the text overlay system is falling back to basic fonts
  2. The text should still appear, but it might look different than the preview
  3. Use the Font Test Utility to check which fonts are available on your system
  4. Text overlays work best when proper TrueType fonts are installed

 

Stars aren't showing up

What you see: The star overlay checkbox is enabled but stars don't appear in the preview or final thumbnail.

How to fix it:

  1. Make sure you've clicked the stars to set a rating (0 stars means nothing displays)
  2. Check that the star color isn't the same as your image background
  3. Try changing the position to make sure stars aren't hidden behind image elements
  4. Refresh the page and try again

 

All galleries show as complete but some don't have thumbnails

What you see: The "All Galleries Complete" message appears but some galleries still need thumbnails.

How to fix it:

  1. Go back to the gallery review page and check the filter
  2. Make sure you're viewing all categories and statuses
  3. Some galleries may have been disapproved and won't appear in the queue
  4. Check if the galleries have valid URLs - galleries without URLs are skipped

 

The page says "Images may have expired"

What you see: You returned to the cropping page but now it shows an error about expired images.

How to fix it:
Nothing to worry about - the page will automatically re-scan after 2 seconds. Temporary image files are cleaned up when you start a new scan, so if you navigated away and came back, the files are gone and need to be downloaded again.

Thực hành tốt nhất

Chọn đúng mùa gặt

Ghi chú

Ghi chú: Trình tổng hợp tự động tải ảnh mẫu lên máy phục vụ FTP đã cấu hình nếu bạn đã cài đặt. Bạn không cần làm bất cứ điều gì đặc biệt - nó xảy ra tự động khi bạn tiết kiệm.
Ghi chú: Hai phiên bản của mỗi mẫu ảnh được lưu: một phiên bản hiển thị ở mức độ chất lượng đã cấu hình, và một phiên bản chủ với 100% chất lượng. Bạn có thể tái tạo các mẫu ảnh từ các bậc thầy nếu bạn thay đổi thiết lập chất lượng sau này.
